Preserving a Cultural Legacy: The Art of Mughal Embroidery

In a world where fast fashion dominates, Jeannie McQueeny has always believed in the enduring beauty of clothing that transcends trends. A garment crafted with exquisite materials and adorned with refined embroidery has the power to be cherished and worn for years. Twenty years ago, I had the privilege of being introduced by my friend, Rajni Malla to work being done by the descendants of Mughal craftsmen in Kathmandu. Their ancient techniques captivated me. Since then, working alongside them, we have delved into their rich heritage, fully exploring their artistry and historical techniques.

The Craftsmen

It has been an absolute joy to collaborate with these talented craftsmen, whose expertise has been passed down from father to son for generations. When they enter the workplace, they carry large flat cushions and old-fashioned tin pencil cases that hold their long, thin needles – the tools of their trade. With wood looms stretching the fabrics, a stencil marks the design to be embroidered, and carefully chosen threads are skilfully woven together to bring the vision to life.

The Magic of Creation

One of the most enchanting aspects of this process is in creating motifs and selecting the colours and threads.
From threads of finest silk to luxurious cashmeres, and even ravishing silver and gold zardozi threads, every
spool is material is carefully chosen to match the materials, to enhance the beauty of the final piece. Watching it
all come together is nothing short of magical. Swishing fringes, created on the same looms, are also meticulously
crafted by knotting threads into the material, adding an extra touch of sensuous fun.

Exquisite Handcrafted Embellishments

Silk kimonos, and cashmere sweaters take on a new level of opulence with hand-sewn sequins, beaded reef scenes that capture the light of Bahamian waters, or gardens flush with jewelled flowers . While this profession is predominantly pursued by men, a small group of women is responsible for the all-important task of tidying up the final details. These women, with their deft hands, have also mastered the art of plaiting rope and creating beaded belts, adding their own touch of skill to the creative process.

The workplace where this craftsmanship thrives is a happy place, combining creativity, historical knowledge, vibrant colors, and incredible beauty. It is here that a cultural legacy is preserved, and I am incredibly proud to have played a small role in this endeavor. By embracing and supporting these artisans, we ensure that their traditional techniques and artistry continue to thrive and inspire future generations.

In a world where disposable fashion reigns, the art of Mughal embroidery stands as a testament to the timeless beauty of clothing. By collaborating with skilled craftsmen and immersing ourselves in their rich heritage, Jeannie McQueeny has witnessed the creation of garments that exude elegance and carry with them a cultural legacy.

Let us all celebrate and preserve the treasured traditions of Mughal embroidery, for they truly are a thing of beauty that brings joy not only to the wearer but also to those who appreciate the artistry behind each stitch.
